NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH UPDATE

Summer Place was recently vandalized.  Two automobiles were damaged and items stolen.  It appears the break-ins occurred late at night.
While we have received excellent support from the Sheriff's Department, the deputies can not provide constant surveillance.  That is up to each of us.

Here are a few tips to better protect out neighborhood and property:

  1. Pay attention.  If you see something unusual notify the Sheriff.  If possible get vehicle plate numbers and descriptions of individuals.
  2. Park automobiles in your garage or driveways, not in the street.  Vandals usually select the easiest targets.  Automobiles parked in the street provide more cover and can be quickly opened.
  3. Lock cars parked outside. Simple enough.  Don't make it easy for someone to steal your car.
  4. Keep your home doors locked and use your security system, if one exists.  Sure, you hate to have to keep your house locked all the time.  When you were a kid no one ever locked the doors.  Times have changed.
  5. Keep the garage doors closed.  An intruder could hide in the garage and break into your home when you leave.  Often vandals will rush into an opened garage and steal an item and run.  Don't make it easy for them.
  6. Know your neighbors.  Watch one another's home.
  7. Call the Sheriff.  Enforcement is up to the police.  Do not endanger yourself.

If vandalism occurs call the Sheriff immediately and make a report.  No event is minor.  Then notify the neighborhood board members.

( Summer Place will Participate in the National Night Out, Wednesday, August 3, 2004.  Plans are being made for a community cook out.  The Deputy for this area will attend and answer your questions about enforcement.  You will have an opportunity to get to know the individual responsible for our protection.  Plan to bring your best covered dish.  Summer Place will provide plates and the dessert, that wonderful Hilton Head ice cream.  More details to come.)
